| Hello fellow vegetarians! I've been a vegetarian for about 3+ months now, and I'm anxious to start cooking some serious vegetarian main dishes. Can anyone recommend their FAVORITE all time vegetarian cook book and tell me why it's your fav?
Thanks! ***** I should also mention that I DO NOT eat any meat or by products, but as of right now I do eat dairy and eggs(sparingly!) I am hopefully going to go VEGAN, but not right now, I'm too poor for that :(

| someone broke into an apartment in my complex and now i am scared so i just bought renters insurance and i plan on buying some metal mesh stuff and drilling it to cover my windows. good idea? bad idea? my windows are the old kind in which you turn a lever and the tiny panes open like an awning would on the side of a building. WORST WINDOWS EVER. i wish i could convince my landlord to replace the windows for more energy effecient ones... but it took them 2 weeks to fix the pool and i dont even have a remote to the gated parking.

Residents Upset Over Group's Distribution of Qurans [www.myfoxhouston.com]
Last Edited: Tuesday, 01 Jul 2008, 9:27 PM CDT Created: Tuesday, 01 Jul 2008, 8:31 PM CDT Quran FOX 26 News
HOUSTON -- The distribution of Qurans in a southwest Houston neighborhood has some residents worried about the motives of the group who dispersed the Islamic book.
An English translation of the Quran began appearing two weeks ago on the doorsteps of hundred of homes in the BraesTimbers neighborhood. The books came in plastic bags with a note attached from the ‘Book of Signs Foundation’ asking recipients to accept the Quran as a gift from the Muslim community.
But some residents, like Greg and Sue Ann Pieri, said they feared the group is imposing its beliefs on non-Muslims and found the gesture offensive.
“If we went into a Muslim country and left a bible, we would be in prison and then decapitated a few years later,” said Sue Ann Pieri, who chose not to destroy the book like other neighbors did.
However, Houston's Council on American-Islamic Relations President Tarick Hussein said although his organization did not partake in distributing the books, he believes that the Muslims behind the distribution only wanted to educate non-Muslims about the religion.
The Book of Signs Foundation claims to have distributed 30,000 Qurans in Houston, targeting neighborhoods believed to be most receptive of the Quran or in need of a better understanding of Islam.

| is your town full of cute, folky-rocky, little basement bands you want to promote?
they could be you, your friends, or friend's friends, or not friends at all - as long as they play in houses and you think they're awesome, i want to hear them.
will you email me an mp3 of an exceptional underknown local band in your area in exchange for an mp3 of a local little band in my knowledge base? it doesn't even matter to me if you're in the seattle area as well. there are plenty of bands i don't know about.

| I frequently read a consumer-advocacy web site called consumerist. well today, they had an article about how KFC's "Vegetarian Sandwich" isn't vegetarian. (I didn't even know kfc had that...)
The title of the article: KFC's "Vegetarian Sandwich" Isn't, Stop Kidding Yourself That Fast Food Restaurants Have Vegetarian Options
And within the article it says, "It's nice that KFC made the attempt to offer a non-meat menu item, but vegans and vegetarians shouldn't be eating at fast food restaurants."
WHAT????????????? That is the most absurd thing I have read on consumerist, ever. So someone that restricts themselves to a non-meat diet should not be able to grab a quick bite to eat? Accompany non-veg friends and have maybe an option or two?
I have never expected to be catered to, but goddammit people, look at the fricking food pyramid. See the big wide vegetable section there at the bottom? That means human beings should consume more of that, so I don't think it's unreasonable to be able to find AN OPTION at restaurants... even :gasp:... FAST FOOD restaurants. So go comment there if you ever do and tell them that was a stupid ass thing to say, and clearly written by an ignoramus. | comments: 155 comments or Leave a comment |

| at some point in the last 4 years, i became intensely terrified of cockroaches. ever since i saw those june bugs in texas on the way home from arizona over a year ago, it has been spiraling out of controll. it has reached the point where i have banned ryan from uttering their name in the house (or anywhere where i am in earshot), and refer to them as "THOSE BUGS WHO WE DON'T TALK ABOUT" which reminds me of harry potter and then just makes me feel more lame. If they must be discussed, he is allowed to refer to them by the codename "lobsters" because i find them less slightly disgusting. Lobsters are obviously the BUGS WE DON'T TALK ABOUT of the sea, though. I am more comfortable with them because i presume they cannot be out of the water long enough to crawl up the stairs to our second floor apartment.
this is a totally ridiculous situation, and it is slowly extending itself to cover every beetle-like bug (see: my stinkbug freakout at the grocery store a couple of days ago). I never used to be squeamish about bugs, and now i obsess over whether or not THEY might be here and if they are going to crawl all over me and inside me as soon as i fall asleep or if they are going eat the cat when we leave. WHO KNOWS WHAT THEY MIGHT BE UP TO? I also see them constantly in the corners of my eyes crawling on things, or see the cat and imagine she is a giant bug. If ryan hands me a container to look inside i assume it is full of them and he is attempting to make me kill myself. for the record, i have only seen one of these bugs man to man ONCE (not counting that time i found a dead one in a cookie jar at Volunteers of America), and i didn't even recieve outside confirmation of what it was. Also, i managed to approach it in a calm rational manner. not, of course, including the madagascar variety that you see all the time IN CAGES WHERE THEY BELONG. I have never even lived in the right climate for them to be endemic, and i have not lived in the appropriate amount of squalor to attract them.
theories: - i have a brain tumor on my INSECT FEARING LOBE of my brain. (p.s. i have been watching a lot of "house")
- unlike everyone else, i GET how horrible these bugs are. This is kind of like how glenn beck is the only one that gets that the WHOLE ECONOMY IS COLLAPSING BETTER BUY GOLD NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW.
- i am losing my mind
- i am developing inconvenient eccentricities and fears for attention. this is what i would assume if anyone else was telling me about this, or what i assume when people know the distinct "-phobia" name for things.

| | Please pardon me if this is either off-topic or stupid (or both) but I'm quite interested in hearing what you all have to say! I've been veg since last February, and last night I had my first meat dream. In the dream, I was at a buffet and accidentally served myself a dish that turned out to have ground beef in it. It was very vivid and I can remember exactly how it felt in my dream to be chewing on this ground-up meat. Even in the dream, I was horrified, but I was in a restaurant so I didn't want to be gross and spit it out, so I forced myself to swallow it. It totally grossed me out, and I was really intrigued that I'm already having bad dreams about accidentally eating meat. I would have thought they would be good dreams, like the ones that ex-smokers have about having a cigarette, hehe. Have any of you had a similar experience? | comments: 20 comments or Leave a comment |

| The “Should Trap” and How we Ought to Behave
I've frequently mentioned the trap hidden in the word, “should.” It's time now for us to look at exactly what the word means, what it doesn't mean, and how a good understanding of these things will allow us to understand how humans form concepts of morality. We'll soon see that everything from what we should eat for dinner to who we should vote for in the upcoming election to whether or not we should have children or adopt – all of these questions become much easier to answer when we realize exactly what we're asking. | Hey everyone! I'm new to this community (been lurking for a few days), but not new to the idea of being meat-free. I recently graduated college and will be moving in with my partner in two weeks. While I am at my parent's house I eat some meat (because we live on a small farm and raise our own, so I have less qualms about it... etc that's another discussion). Over the four years I was at school I ate less and less meat, and the last two years I haven't bought any meat for myself. And I didn't miss it! So when we move in together we'll also be moving to another state, and I've made the decision to go permanently meat free when we get there. He looooooves his meat, though, and I'm not sure how to tell him. I'm not planning on preaching to him or making him change his diet, but I am sort of hoping to lead by example. Basically I'm not going to buy or prepare meat, like I've been doing for the past few years, and if he wants it he will need to buy it and cook it for himself.
If you have a partner or other family members who are not veg*n (or, who REALLY love their meat), how did you let them know about your decision? Was it a gradual change or sudden? How did they react? Did it get easier? What was the transition like?
Thanks for any help! | comments: 10 comments or Leave a comment |
